Frugal Curtain Rod

So you wanna hang up some curtains and you really want one of those big chunky wood curtain rods, huh? Well, grab a few dollars and head to your closest home improvement store. You'll just need some plastic PVC. You can buy it as skinny or as chunky as you want it. I wanted it chunky.

Most of my guests cannot believe that this curtain rod is made from plasitc PVC pipe. The triple window is kind of large and I wanted the curtains to hang much wider than the window opening. I would be spending a pretty penny to buy a wood rod that size and the style I wanted. I spray painted the white PVC pipe a dark brown color. I used 4 wood brackets to support it due to the length. I am still trying to figure out how to do finials on the ends, since the pipe is hollow. Any ideas?

I really like glass door knobs, or even old door knobs. Check the craft store for wooden balls or finals of some sort. Great job!

I love your idea! I'm going to use it in my living room! Very cool! I'm thinking knobs on the ends, too. Or maybe hot glue some glass ball ornaments? Thanks for the idea!

Hi Jen. Thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving me a comment via SITS. I really appreciate it. About the finials...I saw an episode of Trading Spaces where Edward did the same thing only I think he wrapped the PVC in material. Then he took styrofoam balls and wrapped them in materials leaving enough gathered at the bottom to somehow affix it to the rod. I thought it was a great idea. Maybe you could try that. Hey, I also live in Virginia. I live in Northern VA near DC. What about you?

if you want to stay with the wood theme, you could go to lowes or home depot and look around. Theres always wooden end pieces there for different things. Then just buy a small can of polyurethane in the color tone you need on it. Apply till it matches your rod.

That looks very good. lol I'm gonna have to pay more attention to that room next time I'm over.

That is SO COOL! I hope you'll come share it on my blog, we are sharing "creative concealments" and this is a super creative way to create a curtain rod using something inexpensive!
Love this idea!

GREAT idea. I need some curtain rods right now actually.

For the finials: Cut a hole in a tennis ball and wrap it in fabric - then you just pop it on the end of the rod - you can glue it or just make sure the hole is small enough for it to fit tightly.

My brother is a plumber in Oklahoma.

Next time I visit I'm gonna go looking through his scrap pile.

If you get two short pieces of closet rod or doweling that will fit snugly inside the pvc pipe, simply glue them inside each end and you can screw in any finial you want!

I love that idea! I'm all about saving money so that's right up my alley. thanks for the tip!

Jen,

Thanks for visiting my blog.

About the hitching posts.

Some on 9th, a main road through town, were probably there before the homes were built. On one block there are 2 old homes, one on each corner. With a huge yard in between. On most blocks newer homes were built between the older ones. So there is hardly any space between homes. Ninth street is a mish mash of decades.

Unbreakeable Christmas decorations hot glued would work just make certain you can get the curtains off of the rod no matter what you decide to do.

For finials I just bought PVC end caps that were much larger than the PVC pipe I was using for the rod. I then bought connectors that fit my rod (these are used to connect two pieces of the same size PVC together). Fill the oversized end caps half full with epoxy and set the connectors into them. When they are dry they can be put on and pulled off the rod easily. Paint them the same as the rod and there you go.
